Beatrix: a rooftop British brasserie coming to the King's Road
Chelsea is getting a rooftop restaurant with an English garden for inspiration. Beatrix, announced this week, will occupy the top floor of the Gaumont building at 196 to 222 King's Road, opposite Chelsea Town Hall, as a modern British brasserie wrapped by a terrace. It is not opening tomorrow: the team is pointing to a winter launch, with January 2027 the date given in early reports. But it is one to put on the list now.
Who is behind it
Beatrix comes from the team behind Ixchel, the Mexican restaurant further down the King's Road, so they already know the street and its diners. The kitchen will be led by Eamon Reis, formerly acting head chef at Straker's in Notting Hill, whose earlier posts include Brat and Lardo. That is a CV built on confident, produce-led cooking, which suits a menu of British classics.
What is on the menu
According to Hot Dinners, which broke the news, the early menu looks like this:
- To start: Devon crab crumpets, beef tartare with crispy potato, and Cornish hake with sea beet.
- To share: a Beatrix fish pie, rotisserie chickens and bone-in British steaks.
- Puddings: trifle, Eton mess, apple crumble and a Guinness ice cream float.
- Breakfast: dippy eggs with soldiers and Marmite butter, and porridge with caramelised pear and toasted hazelnuts.
It is a menu of familiar comforts, and the test will be in the sourcing and the execution, which is where a chef with Brat and Lardo on his CV should shine. Breakfast on the list suggests this is meant to be an all-day place rather than a dinner-only destination, which would make it useful for weekend mornings as well as evenings out.
The terrace
The big draw is the wrap-around terrace, which has been fully weatherproofed. That matters: London rooftops tend to come alive for a few summer months and then empty out. A covered, all-weather terrace above the King's Road could become one of the area's more useful tables in every season, including the one in which it is due to open.
Why Knightsbridge diners should care
Modern British cooking in a setting like this is a welcome addition to the choice between Brompton Road and the King's Road. A fish pie on a rooftop with a view is a simple idea, and simple ideas done well tend to last. Rotisserie chickens and bone-in steaks to share also point to the kind of relaxed group dinner that works for families and friends alike. It is a straightforward run down Sloane Street and along the King's Road from Knightsbridge.
How to follow it
There is no booking line yet. The Beatrix website and the restaurant's Instagram, @brasseriebeatrix, are the places to watch for opening dates and reservations. Sloane Square is the nearest Underground station, a walk along the King's Road. In the meantime, our restaurant guide covers what is already open near Brompton Road.
