Wellington Arch
English Heritage arch at Hyde Park Corner crowned by Europe's largest bronze sculpture, with balcony views over central London and displays inside.
About Wellington Arch
Wellington Arch is an English Heritage monument in the middle of Hyde Park Corner, opposite Apsley House. It is topped by the largest bronze sculpture in Europe, the Angel of Peace descending on the Chariot of War, and you can go inside the arch and climb to its balconies.
From the balconies there are panoramic views over central London, across Hyde Park, Green Park and the surrounding streets. Time your visit right and you can watch the Household Cavalry pass beneath on their way to and from the Changing of the Guard at Horse Guards Parade. Inside, displays tell the story of the arch and why it was built, the second floor has a display about the Royal Regiment of Artillery from 1914 to 1918, and the top two floors host changing exhibitions of contemporary art from the Vigo Gallery. English Heritage's podcast has an episode on the arch and the controversy its quadriga caused.
A visit takes under an hour, so it pairs well with Apsley House across the road or a walk through Hyde Park. It suits history lovers, photographers and families with older children. English Heritage members get in free. The arch is open Wednesday to Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with last entry at 4.30pm, but check the website before you go, as hours can change and the lift is currently out of order.
