Brompton Road's Casual Turn: Wagyu Burgers, Sandos and Chips

Knightsbridge's reputation rests on white tablecloths, but the most interesting change on Brompton Road over the past few months has been at the other end of the scale. A cluster of relaxed, walk-in places now makes it easy to eat well between shops without committing to three courses. With spring finally here and the shopping crowds building ahead of Easter, here is where to go when you want something quick, good and unfussy.

GOAT: wagyu burgers from Dubai

GOAT arrived at 146 Brompton Road in November, taking over the former Feya site, and it is the brand's first restaurant outside the UAE. Every burger is made with Japanese wagyu beef. Beyond the main cheeseburger, The Truffle stacks truffle aioli, sautéed mushrooms and mushroom sauce, while The Arigato brings shredded parmesan, teriyaki soy, ponzu shimeji, enoki tempura and kewpie mayonnaise. There are chicken burgers and sandos too, including a Nashville chicken version. Hot Dinners covered the opening in detail. It is a sign of how closely Brompton Road now tracks Gulf tastes, with brands that build a following in Dubai increasingly choosing Knightsbridge as their first step into London.

Secret Sandwich Shop at Harvey Nichols

Down on the lower ground floor of Harvey Nichols, Secret Sandwich Shop, which has spent four years building a loyal following in Notting Hill, opened its second site on 13 December. The menu centres on Japanese-style sandos such as the Egg Salad Sando and The Hungry Dane, plus a monthly special you can only get at the Knightsbridge branch. There is an LA-inspired matcha list, including Tokyo Milk Foam and Coco Cloud, and, unusually for a sandwich counter, Japanese-influenced cocktails: a matcha martini, a Hibiki sour and a yuzu gin fizz. The full menu details include a 21-year-old Hibiki at £150 a glass, for anyone whose lunch break needs an upgrade.

The Mayfair Chippy, all day

A few doors from GOAT, The Mayfair Chippy at 138 Brompton Road serves British classics all day, from 10.30am until 10.30pm Monday to Saturday and until 9.30pm on Sundays, with takeaway too. There is a gin bar for classic cocktails and an outdoor dining area that comes into its own as the evenings lengthen. It is about seven minutes on foot from Knightsbridge station and a short walk from Harrods.

Why the casual wave matters

Knightsbridge draws families, shoppers and international visitors who often want to eat at odd hours, sometimes straight off a long-haul flight. Places that serve continuously, take walk-ins and keep prices relatively sensible fill a real gap between department store cafés and formal dining rooms.

Tips

  • Go before 12.30pm or after 2.30pm at weekends to avoid the lunch peak, when shoppers from Harrods and Harvey Nichols converge.
  • Harvey Nichols opening hours govern access to Secret Sandwich Shop, so check before planning an evening drink.
