Museum-minded hotels in Knightsbridge: The Egerton House and Kit Kemp
This is one of the strongest autumns in years for the museums of South Kensington. The V&A's Schiaparelli exhibition is in its final weeks, Constantinople to Istanbul opens on 7 November, the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Photographer of the Year opens on 16 October and the Science Museum's Becoming America follows on 23 October. For visitors planning a culture-led weekend, two townhouse hotels on the Knightsbridge side of the museums stand out.
The Egerton House: a hotel with V&A perks
The Egerton House, at 17 to 19 Egerton Terrace, is a boutique townhouse in the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, and it describes itself as five-star. Its great advantage for museum lovers is proximity: the hotel says it is moments from the V&A, and guests receive complimentary exhibition entry at the museum, with priority access and members' privileges. In a season when V&A exhibition tickets are in demand, that is a meaningful extra.
The hotel has also offered a private tour and cocktail evening built around the Schiaparelli exhibition. Beyond the museum link, there is afternoon tea in The Tea Room, a breakfast the hotel is proud of, and a bar known for its martinis, with dedicated Martini Experiences. Families and pet owners have their own pages on the Egerton House website, which is also the place to ask about current offers.
Our Egerton House guide has more on the rooms and the bar.
The Knightsbridge Hotel: Kit Kemp on Beaufort Gardens
A few streets away at 10 Beaufort Gardens, Firmdale's Knightsbridge Hotel occupies a Victorian townhouse with a classic brick façade. Its 44 bedrooms and suites are designed by Kit Kemp in her fresh English style, with an emphasis on comfort, craft and colour. It belongs to Firmdale's Townhouse Collection of residential-style hotels.
The ground-floor Drawing Room and Library are for residents and their guests, each with an honesty bar, which makes it an easy place to regroup after a day on Exhibition Road. Afternoon tea is served in the Drawing Room, with a Champagne option. The hotel puts South Kensington station a 12-minute walk away and Knightsbridge station five minutes, with Harrods, Harvey Nichols and the V&A all close by.

Which to choose
- For exhibition lovers: The Egerton House, for the V&A access alone.
- For design lovers: The Knightsbridge Hotel, for Kit Kemp's interiors and the honesty bars.
- For families: both are close to the Natural History Museum; ask each hotel about family rooms.
Both hotels share one quality that matters on a museum weekend: they feel like private houses, so coming back after hours on your feet in the galleries is a genuine pleasure rather than a return to an anonymous lobby.
Booking tips
Late October weekends coincide with school half-term, and November brings the V&A's new exhibition and the run-up to Winter Wonderland, so demand for rooms near the museums rises through the season. Book early, and when you do, ask what exhibition tickets or experiences the hotel can arrange alongside your stay.
