Outdoor Swimming Near Knightsbridge: Serpentine Lido and Rooftop Pools

Easter has been and gone, the clocks have changed and the evenings are finally stretching out. For a certain kind of Knightsbridge resident, that means one thing: swimming outdoors. Whether you prefer cold water at dawn or a heated pool with a view, the area offers more choice than most of London. Here is what to know as the season approaches.

The Serpentine Lido

The lido on the south bank of the Serpentine in Hyde Park is one of London's most atmospheric places to swim, with the lake framed by trees and the city humming beyond them. It is run by The Royal Parks, and according to its official swimming page it usually opens to the public at weekends from mid May and then daily from June until mid September, with dates shifting slightly from year to year. Booking online in advance is recommended, and on quieter days you can book in person. Facilities include changing rooms, toilets and the Lido Café Bar, which is a fine spot for breakfast in its own right.

The swimmers who never stop

The lido's public season is only part of the story. The Serpentine Swimming Club, Britain's longest-established swimming club, swims daily in the Lido between 5.30am and 9.30am, and its members are famous for the Christmas Day race. For anyone already acclimatised to cold water, it is the most committed way to start the day in SW7. Newcomers should treat April water with respect: it is still cold, and building up gradually is essential.

The Berkeley's rooftop pool

For warmer water and a dramatic outlook, The Berkeley on Wilton Place has a heated, open-air rooftop pool overlooking Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Hyde Park. It operates seasonally through spring and summer and is reserved exclusively for hotel guests, with no day passes, so a stay is the only way in. Non-residents can still enjoy the view from the hotel's Rooftop Bar, subject to availability and seasonal opening. Full details are on the hotel's rooftop pool page.

An all-weather alternative

If the forecast turns, The Peninsula London at Hyde Park Corner has a 25-metre indoor pool with underwater music and illuminated overhead panels, open to hotel guests alongside its spa and 24-hour fitness centre. It is a reminder that a good swim in Knightsbridge does not have to depend on British weather.

Why swim at all?

Swimming outdoors is one of the simplest ways to reset after a long winter, and in this part of London it comes with a view. A morning lap in Hyde Park or a swim above Wilton Place is a reminder of how much green and open space sits on the doorstep of Knightsbridge.

Practical tips

  • Check the Royal Parks site for confirmed lido dates before planning a weekend swim.
  • Cold water swimming carries real risks; never swim alone, and get out before you feel cold.
  • Knightsbridge and Hyde Park Corner stations are both about 15 minutes' walk from the lido.
